Blessings

“Your father’s blessings are greater than the blessings of the ancient mountains, than the bounty of the age-old hills.” Genesis 49:26

The description in Genesis of Jacob blessing his sons gives us a great opportunity to ponder the significance of blessings. There are many people in our world who hunger for a blessing from others and especially from their own father and mother. They are often people who become marginalized in some way due to sickness, life choices or because they are poor.

When a father offers a blessing to a child, as is described in the old testament story of Jacob, a message of approval is given in a way that speaks well of the person. Too often, in our work places and our families, we find people who are deprived of approving messages.
